Chinese-English Dictionary
Index by English | Index by Pinyin

This is an online Chinese-English dictionary. The dictionary is mainly based on CEDICT (Chinese English Dictionary) originated by Paul Denisowski, which is a text file containing over 20,000 Chinese words with English definitions. For more info about CEDICT, check out the CEDICT project or Mandarintools.com. CEDIC is virtually a database and not user friendly so we have spent many hours to create this web-based dictionary. Hope it is useful to you.

To view the Chinese characters of the dictionary, you will need to have the Chinese GB encoding enabled for your browser. The browser may ask you to install the Chinese font if you have not done it yet.

If you use Internet Explorer, follow the steps: View -> Encoding -> Chinese Simplified (or More -> Chinese Simplified). Please disable Auto-Select (View -> Encoding -> Auto-Select).

If you use Netscape, follow the steps: View -> Character Coding -> Chinese Simplified (or More -> East Asian -> Chinese Simplified). Please set Auto-Detect to Chinese Simplified (View -> Character Coding -> Auto-Detect -> Simplified Chinese).

If you have problems to download Chinese fonts, please use this link. Make sure to download Microsoft Global IME for Chinese (Simplified) - with Language Pack. Install it following the instructions from Microsoft.

The dictionary is indexed by both Pinyin and English so use the following links to look up a word.
