Just a few weeks after photos of China's version of the stealth fighter were unveiled, video footage of the J-10 fighter aired on China Central Television's (CCTV) evening newscast on Jan. 23 that has caused a stir.

Internet users have said that part of CCTV's video, purported to be of an air force drill, looks suspiciously similar to part of the final fight scene from the 80s movie classic Top Gun. CCTV's video shows the J-10 fighter plane flying and later destroying another jet.

The Wall Street Journal has placed the CCTV footage and the questionable clip from Top Gun side by side in slow motion. The WSJ says CCTV had no comment about the authenticity of its video. Watch the WSJ's side-by-side video comparison here and decide for yourself if the CCTV footage is authentic

The video was copied from Top Gun. The jet that exploded was a Northrop F-5E which China does not possess. The real Navy weapon school (aka Top Gun) used F-5E to simulate flying charteristic of Mig-21; that’s the same jet we seen in the movie Top Gun, the movie named it Mig-28 (fictional name).
