It appears Chinese couch potatoes won't be going back to the future anytime soon. China's State Administration of Radio, Film and Television has halted production of time traveling TV shows (穿越剧, chuānyu j), according to blog, China Hush.

The time travel genre, in which characters in television dramas travel forward or backward through time, has become increasingly popular in China in the last year. The decision to stop production of these popular shows came during SARFT's Television Director Committee Meeting on April 1. The committee said the dramas 'disrespected history:'

"The producers and writers are treating the serious history in a frivolous way, which should by no means be encouraged anymore."

The ban on time travel shows comes just a few days after Google.cn's time traveling-themed April Fool's joke in which Google searchers could conduct time traveling searches. Did Google travel into the future and foresee this coming?
