Some 600 members of a Christian cult in China were held for disturbing social order by spreading doomsday fears in the run-up to Dec. 21, 2012, a day marking the end of the Mayan calendar which some see as also marking the end of the world, according to CNN.

The group belong to the Almighty God cult, a cult established in central China in 1990 whose members believe Jesus has been resurrected as a Chinese woman and must give their possessions to the group. The members detained were in their 40s and many are unemployed. They allegedly went door-to-door with leaflets telling folks the sun would not shine and there would be no electricity for three days beginning on Dec. 21.
