1. The First Month

There are many customs and festivals associated with the Chinese lunar calendar. Learning the customs will certainly help us have some overall ideas about Chinese culture. The following is a brief summary of them for the first month of the Chinese lunar calendar. The summaries for other months will be added soon.

Day Name Custom/Traditions
1 Spring Festival or
Chinese New Year
Greetings, worshipping ancestors and gods, fireworks, new year cake, etc.
2 Night of little Nian (dog day) None
3 Morning of little Nian (sheep day) No sweeping
5 Broken five (ox day), birthday of the Road God The first day for business, worshipping the Road God (the God of Wealth)
7 Human being day Touch up screen and bed
8 Grain day Foretell the production of grain
9 Birthday of the Heaven God or the Jade Emperor Worship the Heaven God
10 Rat day - the day of rats getting married. Having some food for rats could avoid damages by rats.
15 Lantern Festival See this article
19 Yanjiu Festival A Daoism festival.
25 Birthday of the barn God Offer sacrifices to the barn God.
29 or 30 The last day of the month. If it is the 29th, it will be called the poor nine. See the poor Ghost off.
