The power of the Communist Party of China (CPC) is now transferred to the new generation
at the first plenary session of the 16th Central Committee of the CPC, held at the Great Hall
of the People in Beijing on Nov. 15, 2002.
The plenary session elected Hu Jintao as the new CPC central committee general secretary,
the head of the 9-member Political Bureau Standing Committee.
The other eight members of the committee are: Wu Bangguo, Wen Jiabao, Jia Qinglin,
Zeng Qinghong, Huang Ju, Wu Guanzheng, Li Changchun and Luo Gan.
Hu is the only member of the 15th CPC Central Committee Political Bureau Standing Committee
that has entered the 16th CPC central committee.
Jiang Zemin was re-elected as the chairman of Central Military Commission.
Yet Jiang Zemin, the former CPC central committee general secretary,
is not on the new central committee of the CPC. This is not unusual as it was the same
situation for Deng Xiaoping in the 1980s.
The newly elected vice-chairmen of the commission are Hu Jintao, Guo Boxiong and
Cao Gangchuan.
Wu Guanzheng was elected to be secretary of the Central Commission for
Discipline Inspection.
