When Is Da Jiao Celebrated?

Da Jiao is a ceremony to worship deities and ancestors for good luck, fortune, and to keep evil spirits away. Da Jiao are held throughout the year to celebrate the completion of buildings, to celebrate the birthdays of deities, to ask for protection by deities, and to pacify those who died from drowning or fire.

The most famous Da Jiao is the Cheung Chau Bun Festival in Hong Kong. Da Jiao can be held once a year, twice a year or one time and last for three, five or 10 days.

What Happens During the Da Jiao Ritual?

A Daoist master performs a ritual. The actual ceremony has regional variations but the Daoist ritual is the same no matter the location. The ceremonies include offerings, lighting joss sticks, reading prayers aloud, chanting Buddhist prayers and a choreographed Yu Dance backed by a live band.
