Chinese Fortune Telling - Chinese Fortune Sticks

Chinese fortune tellers use Chinese fortune sticks to help determine a person's Chinese fortune.

In addition to using the Chinese Almanac to formulate a person’s fortune, other devices like chien tung or Chinese fortune sticks are used to aid in the Chinese fortune telling process.

What You Need Chinese Fortune Sticks:

  • Name (English and/or Chinese name)
  • Birth year
  • Age

What You Will Learn from Chinese Fortune Sticks:

The Chinese fortune stick method can be used to tell a person’s fortune in general terms. The Chinese fortune sticks are considered by some as less accurate because there is only the same, limited combination of fortunes for everyone as the bamboo or wooden container only contains 12 sticks; therefore, the fortune sticks are often used in conjunction with another fortune telling method.

How Chinese Fortune Sticks Work and What You Can Expect:

The fortune teller and the client may sit at a table across from each other or next to each other. After writing down your name, birth year, and age, the fortune teller will shake 12 sticks in a bamboo or wooden cylinder and then ask the client to select three sticks.

Each stick is inscribed with Chinese characters revealing a distinct fortune. The selected sticks are placed face up on the table and the fortune teller uses them as a guide as he or she consults the Chinese Almanac to determine the client’s fortune.

The consultation takes 15 to 20 minutes. Sometimes the fortune teller will use Chinese fortune sticks with coin divination or palm and face readings to ascertain a person’s fortune. The cost varies and is sometimes negotiable but it typically begins at $15 to $20.
